Tulu Brahmins is believed to have migrated from Tulu speaking regions of South India which include regions in Kasargode district of Kerala and Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka. Their migration might have happened during the Second World War. Many historical data refer that it was during this period that Tulu Brahmin restaurants began to mushroom in the region, which strengthens this assumption. People of Mattacherry took an instant liking for mildly spiced vegetarian delicacies served by the Tuluvas and most of the restaurants blossomed. It is believed that Masala Dosa, Chappathi and Jangri, a sweet that resembles jilebi was introduced to Mattancherry by the Tuluvas. There are approximately 20 Tulu Brahmin family in the area.
